Sheena: Are you a bookworm?

Steph: Or do you call yourself a web crawler?

Sheena: Do you like the smell of book pages?

Steph: Or would you rather stare at the glowing light of the computer?

Sheena: In school work, it’s always a choice between two worlds. Where to get information fast that is still reliable and truthful.

Steph: The quest to get the perfect grade. Where will you go, to the library or to the internet?

Sheena: In this latest fact-filled episode of Hashtag Avenue, you don't have to open a book or click Google to get all the answers for these questions. I am your clever talker Sheena.

Steph: And I am your pretty chatter Steph. And together we are your sister-friends! Join us in talking about common things with common sense.

*it would be nice that the setting is at a library (with computers around)

*sheena has a book while steph is using a netbook.

All are in question series, no answers yet...

(may be edited)

    1. Which is better as a research tool?

        a. In terms of  quality and reliability

  1. In terms of accessibility and making work easier and faster.

        c. On cheapness.

        d. Now that we've got the Internet, why do we still need libraries?

Segment #1

Sheena: Ahh...the Library, a place of knowledge and tranquility. Everybody knows that a library is an important branch of a community. And all of us at least know where to locate one. For example, schools and government offices have libraries to manage information resources for reference and borrowing.

Steph: Yup, but how does one define an excellent library? Fact, the first libraries were found in ancient Mesopotamia and since books did not exist back then, people had clay tablet to record all their laws, astronomical data, commercial transactions, even poems and the latest royal gossips. Imagine carrying those tablets going to school, Sheena.

Sheena: Uber back ache, Steph. If the people of the ancient times considered their libraries a great value due to the history and information they hold, today the evolution of libraries is helping us in improving our learning needs. From tablets and scrolls to the invention of books and finally, entering the 21st century where libraries today, large as a mansion or as small as a classroom, now have the aid of technology. Aside from print media, libraries also have their own multimedia collections such as DVDs, films, and e-books.

Steph: But the library isn’t always a great place to get some work done. A busy student like me doesn’t have the luxury of the time to wander around in a huge library to get the perfect book. That’s why we have …wait for iiit…the internet. Just get a computer with internet connection, type in your topic and Google will lead you to the websites that’ll help you on your homework.

Sheena: Talk about lazy.

Steph: It’s called being resourceful, Shee-na. See, I’m searching about the history of the internet right now and….its buffering…still buffering.

Sheena: The internet is a system that lets computers connect with other computers to get information by networks. The first computer network was called the ARPANET, produced by the US military in the 1960’s. By the 1980’s the creators of the ARPANET joined with other networks made by universities to create the Internet.

Steph: Finally…it stopped loading na. In 1981, only 213 computers were connected to the internet. This year, according to the Culture-ist.com, there are more than 2 billion internet users worldwide. And I’m guessing you’re not one of us, library-user Sheena.

Sheena: Hey, I use both, Steph. Besides, there are ways that the library is better than the internet.

Steph: Guess we’ll have to see then.

We’ll boys and girls, children of all ages; it’s that time again where we get up close to you and your brain on another community interaction with the question: What’s better, libraries or the internet?

Series of answers

RTD of the Hosts

Discuss about the advantages and disadvantages / differences of the Internet and the library.

Steph: So I guess there’s no winner, huh?

Sheena: Exactly, sis, both the internet and the library are good sources of information, only there are just some downsides for each.

Steph: But I got to hand it to the internet, it really transformed our lives greatly on how we contribute and gather new information every day. Also, libraries aren’t so bad either after all.

Sheena: Yup, remember, libraries are always evolving to match with our needs. Libraries are places of knowledge, and with the internet, they’re just keep getting better.

Steph: Maybe I’ll go to a library next time for a change.

Sheena: You mean you never been in a library before?

Steph: No.
